Myspace to use Facebook Connect

I already know what your first reaction is, and yes. Seriously. Myspace is looking to integrate Facebook Connect into it’s monster of a social networking website sometime in 2010.

This may come as a shock to you, if you ever go on the Internet and use social networking sites. It is well-known that Facebook and Myspace have long been rivals, each one huge social networking sites with similar functionality. But apparently, Myspace is looking to change that by integrating key parts of the Facebook network into their own site.

Apparently, Myspace has a new management team, who are calling the shots on this. They want to make it a more entertainment-based website with social elements, instead of the other way around. This means that Myspace will start focusing more on their music section, videos section, etc… and less on the social networking aspect, which Facebook will be taking some of the weight for.

Seeing as Facebook Connect is a public API, anybody can use it, so this, in no way, constitutes a deal or partnership made by the two websites. They don’t even have to talk to each-other about it. Myspace execs can just walk in, go “Mmkay, I like this,” and walk out with the new-found functionality.

Myspace recently also connected with Twitter APIs, allowing users to update their Twitter status from Myspace and vice-versa. This was the first sign that the website was undergoing a pretty major change.

Nobody knows as of yet just how deep the integration will go, and it’s something that I’m actually quite curious about… Are Myspace users still going to be able to post annoying Bulletin messages? Will they be able to update their statuses on Myspace, or will it just update their Facebook status? I also do not know the limits of the Facebook Connect APIs, so I’m not quite sure how deeply integrated it can be, if they went all-out.
In other news, I’m expecting a name change as well. I think “Facespace” is appropriate. (Googling “Facespace” actually found the image for this article. Ha!)

To tell you the truth, I’m not the biggest fan of Myspace. To me, the thing it’s best for is discovering bands, so I think that this is a good move for them, in that they will be focusing more on bringing us that content. I’m hoping that this actually clears up their image… Myspace hasn’t had the best rep on the Internet for the past few years, and it would be nice to find some use in it.

I’m curious how users of both websites will react… While I’m not an avid user of either (I do have a Facebook profile, but only go on when I get an email telling me that someone’s trying to contact me), I do know that users of one of these sites generally dislike the other, with a passion. Will Facebook users be happy to see their beloved website grow, or will they shudder at the thought of sharing functionality with Myspace? Will Myspace users be so upset about this that they actually start using Facebook? Or will they all see the light and make the move to Twitter?

Only time will tell.
