Importance of backup

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

As some of my regular readers may already notice, some of my newest posts are gone. It’s not that i deleted them or got hacked, it’s just that my hosting company made me a surprise and deleted some of my databases nice right? So the important lesson here is, always have a backup – it doesn’t matter how secure your hosting or application is – shit happens, and you better be prepared for it.

Fortunately i got my backup – unfortunately it was about 2 months old. So, some of my posts got lost, however only few of them were important, the rest were just some announcement and one was a review which wasn’t really so good. The only post that i wanted to get was my Windows vs Ubuntu post, which got a lot of readers and comments as well.

How to retrieve post that wasn’t in the backup? Simple, use Google or Yahoo cache! That’s right i got my old post from there and added it again, to my database. I also had to add over 30 comments manually through phpMyAdmin it took me over a hour, but in the end it was worth it.

This story reminds about about musician who lost all his new songs just before official release. Fortunately his songs were already available on p2p networks and torrents so it wasn’t so hard for him to get them back.

Ok, so if one of the post you were interested in is not available any more then you can thank my hosting company – i am not going to try to get it back, i think i will just rewrite the review i wrote as this was second most interesting post, however poorly written.
