Microsoft BrowseRank

Maybe you already heared about it or maybe not. BrowseRank is Microsoft response to Google PageRank, it is not even close to being ready, but there is already some reliable data coming from Microsoft developers. It is only 8 pages long, but contains a lot of text that you may not found very interesting – like mathematical calculations and probability theory – so i boiled it down to most important facts, to present it to you.

First of all if you prefer to read the source (it is a PDF doc), over my article than grab it here, .

Anyway it is interesting, that oppose to PageRank, BrowseRank will be somewhat open source, as everything you need to do to gain BrowseRank is outlined and explained in that document. It may look like it will be easy for all sorts of spammers to manipulate BrowseRank results but it will be not.

Ok, as Microsoft BrowseRank will be a competition to Google PageRank, than what makes BrowseRank better, or in very least, what is the difference between PageRank and BrowseRank?

The main difference is that, BrowsRank is not based on link counting in any shape, way or form. The main assumpsion that Microsoft developers made is that, links are very easy to manipulate, easy to add, lost and so on. BrowsRank will be calculated from user behavior data. What does it mean is pretty much this. Every time user enters a web site, such variables as: bounce rate, time spent on site, pageviews and so on will be taken to make calculations. Well to put it simple: Website which is interesting and makes people stay or do some actions like write a post – will have higher BrowseRank than website with high bounce rate and low page views.

So it is like combination of Alexa and PageRank – however advantage of BrosweRank over Alex is that Microsoft can (and probably will) implement it into Internet Explorer, so they will collect huuuge amount of data as IE market search is still quite big.

Amazing how in a years time Live is gone and BING is here. Tell you what in the last PubCon I was talking to the Live engineer and I was showing him how even stop words like “The” Live would send traffic in burst and he could not explain the why behind that. As what most with Microsft search engine division BrowsRank really went nowhere fast.

I use Bing and Google whenever i want to find something on the internet. I think that both search engines are very good. `

Every time I stumble upon a good blog post I usually do one of three thing:1.Share it with the close friends.2.save it in some of the favorite sharing sites.3.Make sure to visit the website where I read the article. After reading this post I am really thinking of doing all 3!
