I see often that people instead of developing their websites, creating content wander: what will Google say? In my opinion most of people read to much about SEO and instead of creating original and unique website they end up asking the same question.
For example Jeremy from www.shoemoney.com put on his main website links to most active commentators on his blog and soon people started asking him: Yeah it’s great idea man, but what will Google say? They have these anti link selling policy? What was Jeremy response? Let me quote it for you:
I write my blog for people not search engines. I am always shocked peoples first instinct when making a site is OMG WHAT WILL THE SEARCH ENGINES THINK!.
To answer your question no. I am not worried.
Do you see what i mean? And what actually Google could do to someone who is selling links or giving them away for free, did you thought about that? My answer is they can do NOTHING. First of all if website is fantastic with a lot of unique content and a lot of traffic, like www.shoemoney.com for example, would they ban him from their SERPS because he is giving away links? NO, selling links do not affect content of the website, so why would anyone be banned for having few extra links on his main page.
By the way do you know who should be banned for selling links in the first place? Well the answer is quite simple, it is: www.dir.yahoo.com. The biggest link selling directory, but i see they have almost two millions pages indexed in Google.
More over it is paradox, that people seem to care more about search engine bots, then real users. Bot will never appreciate your blog, he will just index it and move on to another site he will not even understand what you are blogging about! Real visitors on the other hand will know what you are writing about, but if you focus to much on keywords and all this SEO stuff you are reading about, then they will also have hard time understanding you and there will be no reason to come back to your blog to read about something they do not understand – it is pointless.
Again, take a look: Googlebot will never understand what you are doing or writing but no matter what he will return to your site if you have new content he can “read”. Real user will never return to your website IF he can’t understand what you are writing about, makes sense?

Yes, good content and a site that is useful and enticing to real people is what matters most in search engine optimization.
That’s why SEO is a bad term and I dislike when people try to ‘trick’ bots into liking them.
SEF, search engine friendly sites, however, are quite important. There are a lot of minor things you can do to help your page rank without detracting from the user-experience.
You’re right to a point, content is definately king.
Unfortunately, alot of small bloggers are competing with companies that have quite a bit of funds for SEO and paid services which we just don’t have the resources for.
The do follow/do not follow from google is just another way to try and keep the spammers from getting too high on the list. I don’t see a end in sight for this problem for quite some time really.
Some things never seem to change

Huh I’m amazed! This is a cool web-site. Insane suggestions as well. Thanks!
