People in web development industry often say: use of free open source content management systems is responsible for all spammy sites which has got no value for real user, so if there would be no content management systems then we would have only quality sites on the web, because in order to create a site you will need to invest money first and investing money is a sign that you are serious about that.
However in my opinion this is only one side of the coin. There are a lot people out there who has a lot of experience in something like playing a guitar, origami or whatever, this maybe hobbies that are not very profitable (unless you are a rock man), so they do not have money to invest in website, but thanks to CMS’s like WordPress they can create website or blog within minutes and share their knowledge. I have no doubts free CMSs are needed this not only includes content management systems for creating website but forum software as well.
Of course this software could be commercial so theoretically there would be less spammy sites and paying like 20$ or 50$ dollars for great website software wouldn’t be a big deal for someone who is serious about creating a website.
As for disadvantages of free software. First of all if anyone can get it, then hackers can also and if you have something then you can try to crack it. This is why it seems there is a lot of holes or bugs in open source software, every one can browse source code so everyone can find bugs and if software has got tons of lines then it is probably impossible to make it 100% secure on first release.
You can of course make slightly changes in software to eliminate backdoors, this is actually what banks do when they buy operating system for their servers. They may use RedHat or Susse but this is not kind of RedHat you can download from internet, they pay big money to RedHat company to customize Linux for them. In the end bank gets custom Linux which no one else in the world has got, it makes bank servers impossible to hack.
We could do the same with our open source software, but again we need skills or money to customize software, even if we would like to change templates.
Well i went from spam to security, but i guess they are somehow connected and very important in web development so i will want explore both topics in further posts.
This might be a little off subject, but have you looked at seoclientprospectingrobot dot com? Just wondering if you have any reviews of it, I’m thinking of buying a copy, and wanted to see if anyone had bought a copy yet.
Good post. I just found this Origami-inspired Twitter icon at Digg, which you can use on your blog if it is running WordPress.
Can I take a part regarding your guide to my blogs
